Peers, Policy and Practice: XTP, the SANANIM Peer Program in the Czech Republic (abstract)

Speaker: Aleš Herzog (Sananim NGO, Prague, Czech Republic)

Outreach work with IDUs has been in existence in the Czech Republic for 20 years. Typically, IDU health education and social assistance are conducted by professional outreach workers without drug careers and much less by peers. Moreover, there is not a UF [What is this?] in the Czech Republic. This presentation will discuss some of the reasons for the absence of peer programming in the Czech Republic and present the experience with such programs of of SANANIM, an NGO based in Prague.

XTP, SANANIM´s peer program has been working with peers since 1997. Last year the program included 10 peers in the permanent team and 30 peers in the training and stabilization team. They distributed more than 160.000 needles in 10.000 contacts with IDUs. The presentation shows the phases of the XTP program development, describes its current state and search for suitable forms of peer education and change of behavior by peer intervention. A difficult task is to help the peers in the program to achieve long-term social stability, which is a prerequisite to their steady performance.
